Terms of use
These terms of use govern the use of 2ecure Messenger: the iOS and Android apps, the web app chat.2ecure.com and the 2ecure server (together “2ecure”). By registering, you agree to them.
1. Provider
2ecure is operated by Thomas Halvorsen, [street and number to follow], 8001 Zürich, Switzerland, as a private individual (“we”). Contact: contact@2ecure.com. Use is free of charge.
2. Access by invitation only
- 2ecure is a closed service. Only people who have received a valid invitation code can create an account. Invitation codes are personal, can be used only once and must not be passed on.
- You must be at least 16 years old.
- Each account belongs to exactly one person. At registration, give an email address that belongs to you and that you can access.
- You are responsible for the security of your account: keep your password secret and your recovery key safe. If you lose both, we cannot restore your encrypted messages.
- There is no entitlement to an invitation or an account.
3. Acceptable use
2ecure is for private communication. You are responsible for the content you send or share. There is zero tolerance for:
- illegal content and activities;
- sexualised depictions of minors and any form of child sexual exploitation;
- harassment, threats, stalking, bullying, hate speech and incitement to violence;
- spam, unsolicited advertising and chain messages;
- malware, phishing and fraud;
- infringing the rights of others, such as copyright or personality rights, and publishing other people’s private data without their consent;
- impersonating someone else;
- attacks on 2ecure, circumventing security measures, and creating or running accounts automatically without our consent.
4. Reports
You can report violations at any time:
- in the app, with the report function for messages, people and rooms;
- by email to abuse@2ecure.com.
We review every report within 24 hours and act on it. Because we cannot read end-to-end encrypted content either, we rely on the information in the report. We pass indications of criminal offences, in particular child sexual exploitation, to the competent authorities. Instructions for reporting and blocking are in the help centre.
5. Measures in case of violations
If you violate these terms, depending on the severity we may:
- warn you;
- remove content;
- suspend your account temporarily;
- delete your account permanently.
In serious cases we act without prior warning. We inform you of a suspension or deletion where possible and legally permitted.
6. Account deletion
- You can delete your account yourself at any time: in the app under Settings → “Delete account”, or in your browser on the account page account.2ecure.com. Deletion takes effect immediately.
- On request to support@2ecure.com, we erase your account completely, including your messages on the server, within 30 days and confirm it by email.

7. Availability
We run 2ecure with care, but without any warranty of a particular availability or of being free of errors. Maintenance and outages may interrupt the service at times. Keep your own copies of important content. We may develop, restrict or discontinue 2ecure; we will usually announce a discontinuation at least 30 days in advance.
8. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, we exclude all liability, in particular for data loss, interruptions and content of other users. This does not affect liability for unlawful intent and gross negligence (Art. 100 of the Swiss Code of Obligations) or any other liability that cannot be excluded under mandatory law.
9. Open source
The 2ecure apps and the server components are free software. They are licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (AGPL-3.0), and other open-source licences. Source code and licences are listed under Source code. These terms of use do not restrict the rights these licences grant you.
2ecure Messenger is based on the open-source software Element and the open Matrix protocol. 2ecure is not a product of Element and is not affiliated with Element Creations Ltd or the Matrix.org Foundation.
10. App stores
If you obtain a 2ecure app from Apple’s App Store or from Google Play, their terms apply in addition. This agreement is between you and us only. Apple and Google are not parties to it and are not responsible for 2ecure, its content or its support.
11. Changes
We may change these terms of use. We inform you of significant changes at least 30 days in advance in the app or by email. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before then; if you continue to use 2ecure afterwards, the new terms apply.
12. Applicable law and place of jurisdiction
Swiss law applies, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. The place of jurisdiction is Zürich. Mandatory places of jurisdiction, in particular for consumers, remain reserved.
